Fantastic Four Review

Fantastic, (as cliche as it may sound) describes this movie perfectly. I was invited to the cast/crew screening @ the Famous Players Paramount on Burrard & Smithe in Vancouver, 7 o'clock screening. After getting our tickets, complimentary popcorn, pop, and bottled water, my boss had reserved some choice seats in a packed theatre for my girlfriend and I. After allowing for people to trickle in for another 15 mins, we had the pleasure of a phone call from New York., from the director Tim Story! Tim Story shared his thoughts and thanks with all, and wished he coulda caught a plane with his family for the screeing in Vancouver.( As I was walking out, I overheard that Kevin Smith may be in attendance for the 9 o'clock show.) He, (Kevin Smith) is in town for a speech scheduled to take place on July 9th, (how cool!) Hoped he liked it, seeing that he is a comic afficionado as am I. Wish I coulda ran into him, I'm a huge fan of his work. Story progression/character development, comedy, special effects all wove together to make this movie appealling to movie go-ers of many ages, (well, maybe not seniors. unless they're die-hard comic dorks like myself, Stan Lee, or Jack Kirby.) It has it's somewhat cheesy moments of 'visual comedy', but it also has it's don't-blink-your-eyes -or-else-you'll-miss-it action/special effects scenes. When it comes to the relationships within the 4, this first (of what a hope is at least 3) movie(s) pulls off the akward Reed-Sue,firey Ben-Johnny,and motherly Sue-Johnny 'sibling-love' combos flawlessly. Von Doom was well done, even though his Doom voice seemed a little weak for a man who has found such new power in his disfigurement. However, McMahon did emulate the cool-headed, twisted logic of Doom quite well in liew of his not-so-fear-invoking voice through the mask. His hate for Reed is there at the start of the flick, and festers feroiously through it allOverall, Chris Evans stole the show with his witty comedy, and adolescent behavior as the Human Torch. After having my doubts with him intially being cast for the part, there is no doubt in my mind now that he was the perfect casting for this role. So, for all y'all comic-to-movie-fans, this is another pleasing transistion from book to big screen, one that you'll be happy you saw in theatres.

Time & Money, measurable numbers...

.... that I never seem to have enough of. Or, rather, numbers I don't spend, (ha-ha, funny pun,) nearly enough time paying, (ha-ha-, another pun,) attention to. Have had absolutley fantastical things that have happened to me since my last spillage. Well, those long term decisions that I mentioned, well, alot of them seemingly fell into place for me recently. Moved out of the everlasting warm-womb of Burnaby into an apartment on the cold, harsh streets of Vancouver, (near Commercial & 1st.) All of my Bby-boys seem a little frightened at my new neighbourhood. Maybe it's because my ground-floor apartment that faces the back alley where vagrants sift through trash have bars on them? Or maybe it's because there are homeless people that line the streets and occupy doorways to business establishments all up and down the drive from late night till my early am walk to Skytrain. Now don't get me wrong, a good number of these people are addicts of some form of hardcore drug, and on a sunny day one can see a handful of them with shop set-up selling wares that they probably didn't own to begin with. However, The Drive is still what I describe as, "if God cut a strip of Downtown and pasted it a block away from my place." There are a wealth of cafes, pizza joints, resturants, clothing stores, book stores new and used, convience stores, dollar stores, and, of course, smoke shops. I have yet to try the acclaimed Volcnao vaporizer that resides @ Melting Point. Melting Point from the single visit I have made there, is truely an awesome store. It offers a slendor of blown glass art from local artisits, as well as a cafe and smoke related products. I also recently found hidden away near a park on The Drive, more community type places. I found the local ice rink, pool, and gym which one can use all three as often as one would like for one low price per month or year. Needless to say, I love my new neighbourhood. So, with my place of living now sorted out, (just in the nick of time too. My parents place where I was crashing just before the New Year was more or less sold on the internet unbeknownst to them. They were given two months notice to move,) I had planned on trying to build upon the basework just laid. As much as the world/society deems relationships to be over-rated and un-needed, I feel better in one than not. As, ironically enough, the more you want one, and the harder you look to find one, they elude you much like the Golden Snitch of Quidditch would. But, one unexpected, marvellous day, I was found. Found by someone who must be meant for me, and I meant for her, Kristi. Wow, how wonderful and vibrant this world can be when one is, 'in love.' I had also planned on setting aside an amount of money to fund the purchase of a new computer for myself for my after 9-5:30 work purposes. Well, low and behold, Iwalked into Film Logic on a cloudy Monday morning, (both mind and weather,) and BOOM-SHANKA! A computer for moi! After Darron, (friend and local computer nerd,) had a the once-over of it, he reccomended that I upgrade the RAM from 128 to 256 for a low cost of $55. Why not huh? That done, and not costing me the over-absorbent amount a new PC would of, I then decided to try and re-direct those aforementioned funds to updating my wardrobe. No sooner had I thought that, when good ole mother rang in on my phone saying she just picked up a few pairs of pants and a new sweater from her work for hella cheap. WOW, one thing after another seemed to be falling into place for me. Now, I read a good deal of books, with a wide variety of subjects. Most notably though, are the last string of books that I have read. Although they are subjects that stand alone, there seems to be some sort of inter-weaving of these. 1st of these books was Chariots of the Gods. It puts for the question: Were we visited by a superior intelligence at early stages of civilization? Interview with an Angel was next, which sheds light on many questions we as humans have about ourselves, our purpose, and the 'great unknown.' (What is death, Who/what is God? for starters.) Communion is a book that is an authors' recollection of his life-long-experiences of contact with, and abductions by extra-terrestial beings. And I am now almost finished my reading of Pyramid Power, which goes over the history of the pyramids on the various people whose cultures seemed to of revolved around them. Not only that, but also scientific studies on the mysterious energies/powers that these pyramids seem to keep locked within their enigmatic masonry. Now, if you were to read these texts with an open, unbiased mind, you may see the connections between them as I have. Or, you may simply not. I will share my hypothesises of how these books are connected, and the messages they are trying to convey to the better of mankind to a later date when I can review and report upon them with a bit more accurancy than that of my memory. And, in a final note for this 'blog,' my buddy Snipe, (Dave) were recruited for a ball hockey team by an old school yard chum Estaban Arratia. When asked if he had a team name in mind, which he did not, I suggested the one that Snipe and I have had on the back-burner for some time now: The Red-Eyed Bandits. It was an instant hit, since out of our roster of 15 guys, all but 2 smoke the BC Primo. We priced out the cost of jerseys, (logo-less mind you for now,) and $80 later, 2-toned numbers and name bars stiched onto Ottawa Sentors blank road jerseys, The Red-Eyed Bandits were branded. We played our first game February 7th/2005, and it was our first of many losses to come. As of this blog, we are still yet to win a game............
